Fashion Week Schedule & History
New York Fashion Week 2023 is upon us as the world grows closer to September; however, many fashion events take place all throughout the year. But what exactly is Fashion Week? What is the history behind it?
Fashion Week began in New York City on July 19, 1943 as a way to provide shoppers alternative options to clothing outside of the French fashion trends from the World War II era. Location of the fashion shows took place in various hotels until 1944, where Bryant Park would host shows under a tent behind the New York Public Library until 2009. Lincoln Center would host the events from 2010 to 2015. Event spaces and venues now host the New York Fashion Week events from 2015 to current times.
Fashion Week events are generally clustered seasonally to certain times of year, hence the extensive schedule being year round. Due to their popularity, production, and regularity, an organization to help with these events was created. Paris Fashion Week was founded in 1945, seasonally clustered by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Paris Fashion Week would be organized by the French Fashion Federation; all official events are hosted by FHCM. Milan Fashion Week was founded in 1958, seasonally clustered and organized by Camera Moda. London Fashion Week specifically began in 1984 and is held by the British Fashion Council.
